Libraries Rock!

May 7, 2018
By Brandi Little - Contributing Writer , OVParent

Although it seemed as if Old Man Winter was going to hang on forever ... summer is coming! Many libraries are putting the final touches on plans and schedules for the busiest time of the year: Summer Reading. We all know that libraries rock, but now we get to present this through the collaborative summer theme.

It is so important for families to keep their children reading over the summer months. Children who don't read over the summer experience summer learning loss. Summer reading is critical to a child's ability to not only retain information learned the previous year, but also to grow in knowledge and critical thinking skills for the coming year.

Since the theme we are using is "Libraries Rock," I thought I would share a few books that get kids excited about reading.

"Take Me Out of the Bathtub and Other Silly Dilly Songs" by Alan Katz

What a fun book! Well-known songs, including "Oh, Susannah" and "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," are presented with new words and titles, such as "I'm So Carsick" and "Go, Go, Go to Bed." Some of these transformations are so clever and hysterical that kids will want to burst into song immediately.

"Punk Farm" by Jarrett J. Krosoczka

This has quickly become one of my favorite books to share with kids. At the end of the day, while Farmer Joe gets ready for bed, his animals tune their instruments to perform in a big concert as a rock band called Punk Farm. There is also a sequel called Punk Farm on Tour that will have kids cheering along.

"Groovy Joe Dance Party Countdown"

by Eric Litwin

If this doesn't get you up grooving, then I don't know what will! Groovy Joe is a guitar playing dog who loves to sing and dance, and when many other dogs come and join him, his home gets a little crowded, but the party is fun, and Joe is definitely a guitar hero. The kids get so involved with this story by creating dance moves and telling the whole story. Check out other Eric Litwin books to make reading a good time every time!
