Review: 'People Don't Bite People'

No parent wants to get the dreaded pink slip from the daycare center stating Johnny has bitten another child. Biting is a common behavior for children who have not learned to use their words to communicate their wants and needs. Even vocal children resort to biting because they feel they are not being heard and simply want their way.

If you've ever found yourself exasperated trying to get through to a toddler that "We don't bite!", a clever rhyming book by Lisa Wheeler may be your saving grace. "People Don't Bite People" is a new hardback page-turner from Atheneum, an imprint of Simon and Schuster.

It begins: "It's good to bite a carrot. It's good to bite a steak. It's BAD to bite your sister! She's not a piece of cake."

You can have a good laugh with this book AND get your message across. It has a catchy, changing chorus that always ends with: "A friend will never bite a friend. Biting is for food!" Make up your own melody to go with it, and I guarantee your child will never forget this family value. (I can't guarantee she always will follow it.)

The colorful cartoonish illustrations by Caldecott Award honoree Molly Idle add to the delightfulness of this book. A must-have for every parent of a toddler - and every daycare center!
