What's New

April 9, 2018
By Betsy Bethel - Editor ( , OVParent

It may only be April, but believe it or not it's past time to be thinking about summer camp.

For some families, camp is simple: You pick one location and send the kids there all summer. There certainly are some good ones from which to choose in our area.

But some camps aren't in session all summer, and some have themed weeks that your child would rather eat Brussels sprouts smothered in kale gravy than attend. (Highly opinionated children can throw a wrench in a well-oiled summer calendar.) While I didn't have space to list all the camp themes in this edition, their individual websites should have them. Especially during chilly (and even snowy!) days of early spring, it's exciting to dream about the fun to come during the carefree days of summer.

Marshall County families will have a new day camp to consider at Children's Solutions in the former St. Francis School on Jefferson Avenue. Their daycare center, Imagination Station, just opened for kids ages 6 weeks to 5, and they are planning a summer camp for children ages 5-13. It's a welcome addition to the valley, for sure!

I hope readers will mark their calendars for May 26 for the OV Parent-sponsored Ogden Tiny Tot Trot, a family-friendly, non-competitive, 100-yard run for children through age 5. The trotters take off at 9 a.m., with two heats: one for ages 4-5, and one for ages 3 and younger. There will be other fun activities provided by local kid-oriented businesses and agencies. For those who want to go the extra mile, so to speak, there is the Ogden Fun Run, a one-mile non-competitive jaunt for kids 12 and younger. Both events are part of the overarching Ogden Newspapers Half-Marathon Classic Run and Walk; registration information can be found online at Proceeds from this year's event benefit Laughlin Memorial Chapel in Wheeling.

Last but not least, I want to call your attention to a new business at the Ohio Valley Mall. It was sad news indeed when Toys R Us announced its bankruptcy and closing of the St. Clairsville store; then, Claire's followed suit a week later. But not all is lost! By now, Tilt Studio should be open at the mall, featuring 20,000 square feet of fun and games, including laser tag, miniature golf, a bobsled ride, mini bowling and a snack bar. They will offer birthday party packages and accommodations for group gatherings. Sounds like a great place to spend a day inside, especially when the weather isn't cooperating.

Happy Spring!
