Nothing compares to parenting

January 3, 2018
By Betsy Bethel - Editor , OVParent

In January, I started writing a weekly column for The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, where I am the Life editor. When I took a career aptitude test during my freshman year of college, the result was "newspaper columnist." During my brief stint at The Times Leader in Martins Ferry, I wrote a Generation X-themed column in the entertainment section, and for many years at the Wheeling papers and with this magazine, I have blogged - a platform that didn't even exist when I took that aptitude test.

After 18 years in my current newspaper post, however, I figured it was about time I had a column, which I aptly named Ohio Valley Parent. In my first installment, I poke fun at parenting pundits like myself for our penchant for exaggeration. For example, we like to say parenting is the hardest job you'll ever have; I go on to say how other jobs may seem harder, but how there is a kernel of truth in the difficulty of this role we agree to tackle without pay or vacation days or time off for being sick.

When I asked a friend to proofread it, she mentioned she'd always heard the phrase turned so it's positive: "Parenting is the hardest job you'll ever love." While that sentiment didn't work in that column, I'd like to state for the record that I love being a parent.

It's scary, stressful and I never feel I'm doing a good enough job, but being my kid's mom brings me a deep and passionate joy to which I know, this side of heaven, nothing else will ever compare.
