Hold on to Summer

July 26, 2017

Even though all the store aisles are filled with notebook paper, pencils and bright-colored folders, hold on, summer's not over yet!

There are still plenty of fun things to do to make the most of the summer, including Wheeling Recreation camps like softball pitching and basketball, Vacation Bible Schools, free outdoor concerts and movies, classic movies at the Capitol Theatre, cooling off at the pool or lake, hiking at Raven Rocks, nature activities and campfires at Oglebay, the Celebrate Youth Festival (free stuff!) on Aug. 3 at Wheeling Park, and more.

For a fun lesson in earth-friendly fashion, there's an Upcycled Fashion Show at the Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairsville sponsored by the Children's Museum of the Ohio Valley at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 5. Local children in three age groups, 9 and under, 10-14 and 15-18 will show off their handmade creations using cast-off materials such as bubble wrap, aluminum foil, water bottles and chip bags. The creativity of these kids is off the charts.

No matter what you're doing, I hope you have the chance at least a few times this summer to play outdoors with your kids and end the day with catching lightning bugs and roasting marshmallows by the fire. All too soon, we'll be fighting over taking baths, homework and early bedtimes.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
