As the editor of OV Parent and a mom, I?have been fortunate to get to know many wonderful local champions of children. These are the folks who work with persistence and perseverance to improve programs that benefit the health and well-being of children and parents. And when they discover a vital program that doesn't exist here, they create it.
Every year in April, Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Ohio County Partners in?Prevention Team recognizes three such champions, nominated by parents, community members, professionals and agency representatives. This year, the winners of the Deborah Doleski Allen Champions of Children Awards are three people I have long admired for their tireless dedication and their can-do attitudes. I am blessed to call them my friends; our children's lives are immeasaurably better because of them.
I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the 2017 winners: Claudia Raymer, executive director of the Ohio County Family Resource Network; Melody Osborne with the Adolescent Health Initiative; and Ron Scott Jr., founder of the Ohio?Valley African American Student Association, formerly with Youth Services System and now with the YWCA Wheeling. They will be honored at 2 p.m. April 21 at a ceremony held at Catholic Charities, 2000 Main St., Wheeling. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
