Super Slimy Halloween

October 11, 2016
By Robert and Libby Strong and Richard Pollack - SMART Science , OVParent

Many of us think of "yucky" and "scary" things at Halloween. The recipe below is not scary, but it is pretty "yucky"!

Make sure you get permission before you mix this up at your house!

What you will need:

1) Borax powder

2) Water

3) Elmer's glue

4) Stirring spoon

5) Plastic cups

What to do:

1) Measure 50 ml (10 teaspoons) of Elmer's glue into 240 ml (about 1 cup) of water and stir until cloudy.

2) What does this mixture look like? Is it thin or thick?

3) Next, add 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of borax powder to a small amount of water and stir.

4) Add this to the glue and water mixture, stirring slowly.

5) What happens?

6) Add one or two drops of food coloring if your parents say it is OK.

You have created a type of material called a polymer. Small parts of chemicals link together to become something new. You can play with your polymer and even change the proportions to see if you can make different consistencies of slime.
