The Apple of My Eye

December 14, 2015

"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree," the saying goes.

But, with my daughter Amanda, sometimes we thought the apple was from another orchard!

We used to joke at home that maybe she was adopted - often she was the odd-girl-out.

We loved her anyway!

However, people always say we look exactly alike - we don't see it. In fact, one time we sat in a car, each looking at parts of our faces in the vanity mirrors trying to find SOMETHING that resembled each other.

I think we finally decided maybe it was our lips.

We figured it must have been mannerisms more than actual features. And our voices, especially on the home telephone - way back when landlines were popular.

But just lately, she fell in love with something near and dear to my heart - yoga.

I started taking a yoga class when I was around 28 or 29. I was pregnant with her, in fact. I loved it. It felt as if I was doing a healthy thing for my baby and for me.

I didn't do much yoga for about 15 years after she was born, and then I started taking classes again.

I eventually found the perfect yoga teacher, Julia Payne, who has since retired from teaching group classes. (Her former students, myself included, will never find as good a teacher, we've all decided! - well, not with that attitude, Amanda admonished. Julia ruined us for anyone else - that's how good she is!)

So, one day recently, when I was visiting Amanda, she invited me to try a new yoga studio with her, located just down the street from her Lawrenceville home. I went. It was great - a bit strenuous (my entire body was reminded the next morning of the previous day's class), but it was nice to be back in a yoga class.

And she loves it!

It's a perfect thing for her to do as the mom of a 1-year-old. Good for her; good for the baby, too!

She's been back to class several times and bought herself an unlimited class card. And she even asked for yoga clothes for Chanukah/Christmas gifts!

And, of course, we all do know where she got the shopping gene!
