Underestimated

October 17, 2016 - Stacey Sacco
When we decided to send the boys to school, I never once doubted that it was a good decision for Matthias. He typically does well, even excels, in those kinds of settings. My hesitation was with Justus, my wild child. He is most likely to break a leg and most likely to attempt something everyone else knows is just ridiculous. He is not mostly likely to be a perfect student.

We had a choice to put him in either Kindergarten or first grade. It didn’t take much thought before we decided on Kindergarten. We would rather he be confident and successful than always struggling just to keep up. And within days of starting school, we knew it was the right decision. Not only is he not struggling, he is thriving. He’s a classroom leader and he is making noticeable changes almost daily.

All of my worry and anxiety about him not being able to sit though class or follow directions are unfounded. My concern that he would be completely apathetic to the learning process was so far from the truth. He’s excited and engaged. He loves to show off his new skills of reading and penmanship. The difference is remarkable.

Apparently, this is just what he needed. He loves school and his teacher and his friends. He comes home and plays school with Anelise so he can show her what it is like. Now she is excited about going to kindergarten next year!

I’m both sorry and elated to say that I underestimated him. I should have known he was capable of so much more. And I’m so glad he showed me that I should have more faith in him. He is in the perfect place for him. He is successful. He has friends who seem to enjoy being around him. I could not be happier with his school situation. I had no clue we had a kindergarten rock star on our hands.
